Hour of Code 2021: Computer science everywhere!

From fighting disease to exploring outer space, computer science is everywhere! Celebrate the impacts of CS during this year’s Hour of Code.

Computer science has helped unlock mysteries in math and medicine. It’s been used to create art, including your favorite games, movies, and TV shows. It helps us eradicate diseases and enables us to explore the depths of outer space. It allows us to imagine ancient civilizations, as well as build the cities of the future. And obviously, computer science is responsible for the very device you’re reading this story on!

Computer science is everywhere, and we’re discovering new uses for it every day. Discover the connections to CS in your life and celebrate CS everywhere during this year’s Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week, from December 6–12, 2021!

Discover the connections

The theme for this year’s Hour of Code is #CSEverywhere, and students and teachers are encouraged to explore the relationship that computer science has with different subjects in school, different industries, and even different career paths.

Our goal is to make students aware that computer science has many different and exciting applications and is used in a number of creative ways to help solve problems, advance research, create art, keep our infrastructure safe and healthy, and more. We hope this inspires students of all ages to continue learning computer science beyond the Hour of Code.

Still supporting remote learning

We know that your classrooms might still look different this year, whether you’re back in person or continuing remote learning. Our How-To Guides include one for hosting in virtual settings, and we’ve updated our guides for volunteers, companies, and even parents to engage.

As in years past, there will be Hour of Code Unplugged activities available to allow students with limited internet access to participate and feel included.

How YOU can get involved

Computer science really is everywhere! So you don’t have to be an educator in order to host an Hour of Code at home, with a classroom, or with your company. You don’t have to be an engineer in order to volunteer virtually with a classroom and share how technology has impacted your life. Best of all, you don’t have to be a computer scientist in order to spread the word about the Hour of Code: Share your Hour of Code highlights with us on social media! We love seeing your classroom videos, photos, and student projects using #HourofCode.

Share #CSEverywhere on social

You can also help us celebrate computer science everywhere by following us on social media, sharing photos of your favorite example of computer science in action, and tagging it with #CSEverywhere! Do you have a smart thermostat that keeps your house at just the right temperature? Can you use an app to stream the latest TV shows? Does your favorite restaurant use a QR code to display its menu? Show us!

Are you ready for the 2021 Hour of Code? Join us in this global learning campaign to give every student in every school the opportunity to learn computer science and build a brighter future.
